Hi-ho Silver, Away!

by

So I’m still trying to wrap my head around Johnny Depp as Tonto, while the rest of the nation is trying desperately to figure out just WHO will he call Kemo Sabe? There’s been no official announcement to clue us in on who will play the Lone Ranger himself, so everyone is forming their own opinions of who would do best in the roll.

While the LA Times figures the best mystery man of all would be Viggo Mortensen, especially after seeing Hidalgo and the Appaloosa trailer, saying he does the “dusty-trail adventure thing with a nice flair”, others are certain that George Clooney would best fit the roll. It would definitely be a powerhouse pair to drive box office sales, if it were true, and they both do love that dead pan dry kind of humor that encourages the wink-wink nudge in the dark of the theater.

While some think he’d be perfect, going so far as to quote an insider’s view that “George is very keen, he’s been trying to do a movie with Johnny for a long time” and that he thinks “they’ll make the perfect on-screen partnership”, the LA Times isn’t so sure. Maybe Clooney is too old, though Johnny’s age is excused since he tends to approach his acting career “like a kid rummaging through a trunk of dress up costumes.”

Alas, we will still have to wait for the announcement, as no one has stepped up to officially say “it’s me! I’m the Lone Ranger!” and while we do, there is no end to the speculation. Who do YOU think would fill the roll the best? Who can match Johnny’s star power, and play the leader, to Depp’s sidekick? Who do YOU think he should call Kemo-sabe? Hit up the comments, and let us know!

I’ve never heard of a remake of the Lone Ranger. I idolized it as a kid. Always said that if I ever bought a horse, it would be a golden palomino.
But to try and re-create the simplistic magic of that era is kinda insane. Why? Most who remember the show aren’t clamboring for a remake. Most who don’t couldn’t care less.
This would have to be crafted VERY carefully, with the characters re-written to embody both the spirit of the original, and the modern sensibility and humor of the present. With the emphasis on humor, (IMO) because most western fables fall flat nowadays, because of the bare revisionist plots, (Overexposure) due to the limitation of the genre.
I have no problem whatsoever with Viggo Mortensen playing His Nibs; he could play the devil himself (Oh, wait…he did)
My concern is with the screenplay. The director. The cinematographer. The distributors.
Film is a muscular bitch. Remakes are worse. Christ, Mortensen won’t even do the sequel to Dances With Wolves, and the part was originally written for him specifically by the author.
But okay, with all that negative poopoo said, at first glance I think Depp could play a bitchin’ Tonto, with the right Kemosabe’ in tow.
Forget Clooney, he’s too up-front cheese. It has to be someone almost as hincky as Depp.
Mortensen might be a great candidate at that. Would he do it? I doubt it.
    Just my opinion.

This has potential for being an awesome film. Johnny Depp as Tonto. Perfect! But NOT George Clooney as the Lone Ranger. It should be someone whose talent at least approaches Johnny’s. I say either Christian Bale or Robert Downey.

Una de las aficiones del seńor Miyagi, aparte de dar forma a bonsais, consistía en tratar de atrapar moscar con unos palillos chinos, esta actividad, un poco rara, está al alcance de muy pocos debido a la cualidades necesarias:
