Headwear Hall of Fame!

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Did you know there was such a thing? Me either. Apparently, however, there is, run by the Headwear Association, who have, since 1908 been proud to “promote hats and and headwear awareness world wide.” I did not realize that we needed awareness of hats. Around here, we wear them to keep our ears warm. But whatever. There IS a point to this, I promise!

Recently, they made the list of their first 6 inductees to the Headwear Hall of Fame, and guess who’s on it? None other then our favorite hat wearer, Johnny Depp! Johnny joins Vince Lombardi, Samuel L. Jackson, Princess Diana, Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Madonna in the inaugural batch, where they’re praised for being “current day hat wearers, as well as early influencers, that have had an impact towards the evolution of hat wearing and fashion.”

Well, any award is a good award, hm? Besides, we ALL know we love Johnny in a hat…

Johnny Scores National Movie Award

Friday, September 12th, 2008

On Monday, Johnny picked up the National Movie Award in London for Best Male Performance for Sweeny Todd, though he couldn’t be there to accept it in person. The Sun reported that there were boos, because he was one of many celebrities that didn’t show up for the awards. “Johnny Depp was booed by the audience as he accepted his Best Male Performance gong with a video clip.”

Thanks to Trish over at Depp Impact, she dug up the video itself, and I’m pretty sure I only heard one little boo -and I listened to it three times…

…ok, I wanted to watch Johnny talking three times, and happened to catch the one weirdo. Maybe he wasn’t as upset about Johnny’s not being there as much as he wanted someone else to win? Don’t know, but one sour apple won’t spoil the delight it is to drool over watch Johnny’s video acceptance of his award.

In other news, Variety reports that Depp has accepted a new roll, teaming up with Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski on “Rango” an animated picture for Paramound due out in March 2011.

Johnny will be the voice of the lead character, a household pet that goes on an adventure to discover his true self. The script is by John Logan (the Aviator) built from an idea by Verbinski. They’ll work with Industrial Lights & Magic on the animation.

They hope to sue cutting edge animation techniques that will allow them to “capture and translate every aspect of Johnny’s performance, using it to drive the computer-generated character in a way that has yet to be seen in an animated feature.”

Johnny will begin working on Rango in January.

Now THATS an award!

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Here’s an award that I’ve not heard talked about - and I think it deserves more press then most! It seems that Johnny Depp has been declared best mustache grower of all time! Yup, this post is all about the ‘tache!

The Everyman Male Cancer Campaign ran the survey in conjunction with the press for the upcoming fundraiser, TACHEBACK. Over the past 7 years, TACHEBACK has encouraged participants to neglect their upper lip for the month of September, gather sponsors, and help raise money for the Every Man Male Cancer Campaign to help fund their research into prostate and testicular cancer. They’ve raised £700,000 since it started in 2003. This year, they’re aiming to smash the £1,000,000 barrier!

They are based in the UK, so I’m not sure if others can join the fundraiser or not, but if you’re willing to neglect your upper lip for a month, or sponsor someone who is, I say go check it out. They will have challenges, teams and individual events, Tache Warriors, news and fundraiser tips to help you get started. There’s even a party one September 30th in London, where you can say goodbye to your fuzzy lip in style, while you meet and greet with other Warriors!

So, especially if you are in the UK, go and check out the Tacheback challenge, and ignore your upper lip for just 30 days, or support those who will. After all, not only are you helping your fellow man, you could be declared the best Tache, and be in the company of our very, very fine Johnny Depp!

Who wouldn’t want THAT, hm?

Johnny And Tim At Venice Festival

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

Gorgeous as usual is the best way I can describe Johnny’s appearance at the Venice Film Festival yesterday! Johnny was there to present collaborator and friend, Tim Burton, with the career Golden Lion award, and they both looked fabulous, as did Tim’s girlfriend, Helena Bonham Carter.

Johnny wore a white tuxedo, with cream shoes, and Tim was in a black suit, while pregnant Helena wore a beautiful off-the-shoulder gown. Johnny was his usual outgoing self, signing autographs, chatting with fans, and posing for photographers outside for more than ten minutes, before going in to present Tim with the award.

Tim was very appreciative of his award, saying, “I am charmed by this award, which will serve as an inspiration for me forever.” He also joked that it was better than an Oscar, saying the award looked better than “a bald, naked man.”

Both Johnny Depp and his Pirates co-star Keira Knightley will be attending the Venice Film Festival, which began yesterday, along with other A-list celebs like George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Jude Law. Keira’s film, Atonement, was chosen to open this year’s festival.

Johnny will be on hand to showcase advance footage of Sweeney Todd. He will also be there on Sept. 5, which has been designated “Tim Burton Day” at the festival! On that same day, Johnny will present Tim with his lifetime achievement “Lion” award!

Congratulations to Tim, Johnny, and Keira! They’re all having great times careerwise!

Johnny and Orlando Bloom are both in the running for best male performance in the first ever British National Movie Awards, reports Metro.co.uk. Both are up for their roles in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

Also up for best male performance are Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint for their respective roles as Harry Potter and Ron Weasley in Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix. And rounding out the nominees is Daniel Craig for his first turn as James Bond in Casino Royale.

The British National Movie Awards are chosen by public vote. Those nominees should make for some pretty difficult choices! I’d vote for Johnny in the end, but I have to say that I’m also a big Harry Potter, so it would be difficult for me!
