Movie database site IMDb lists four movies under Johnny Depp’s name as being in pre-production. Here are the movies and a synopsis for each:
1. “Shantaram” is the story of an Australian character named Lindsay (Lin). Sentenced to a long, harsh prison term after his personal life spirals out of control, he escapes and makes his way to Bombay (Mumbai). Befriended by a curious character named Prabaker, by a twist of fate Lin ends up living in Prabaker’s slum. Lin immerses himself in the colourful life of Mumbai and his friends from the slum, battling fires, monsoons and ultimately setting up a free medical clinic in an attemtp to make up for past transgressions. Eventually, Khader Khan, a Mumbai mafia chief takes Lin under his wing. In Lin’s mind Khader takes on the role of loving father Lin never had. Their association leads Lin from Love to wretched prison life, freedom to gun running in Afghanistan and to realizations of treachery ultimately his own inner salvation.
2. “The Rum Diary” Begun in 1959 by a then-twenty-two-year-old Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diary details the life and events of Paul Kemp, a freelance journalist who finds himself at a critical turning point in his life while writing for a run-down newspaper in the Caribbean. Paul is challenged on many levels as he tries to carve out a more secure niche for himself amidst a group of lost souls all bent on self-destruction. Thompson delivers a potent story that pushes the sometimes brutal truth of human relations into your face in such a way that it would be absurd to not laugh
3. “Sin City 2″ The film’s plot follows multiple storyline. One is based around A Dame to Kill For which follows Dwight and his former love Ava Lord, who betrayed him and ended their relationship for a wealthier man. Ava now returns years later claiming her marriage is abusive and insisting that Dwight help her. After she frames him for the murder of her husband, Dwight, with the help of Marv, seeks to clear his name. Dwight’s storyline in this film is a prequel to The Big Fat Kill, which occurred in the first film. It explains how Dwight came to have his “new face” and his connections with the Old Town prostitutes. Dark Horse describes A Dame to Kill For: “It’s one of those hot nights, dry and windless. The kind that makes people do sweaty, secret things. Dwight’s thinking of all the ways he’s screwed up and what he’d give for one clear chance to wipe the slate clean, to dig his way out of the numb grey hell that is his life. And he’d give anything. Just to cut loose. Just to feel the fire. One more time.”[3] Another storyline follows Nancy as she grieves the death of Detective Hartigan, the man she had grown to love after he rescued her from That Yellow Bastard who had kidnapped and attempted to rape then kill Nancy when she was a child
4. “Sin City 3″ On a dark night in Sin City, an ex-Navy SEAL named Wallace saved a young woman, Esther, from killing herself. After a night on the town, she was kidnapped by mysterious people. May God have mercy on those who stand in Wallace’s way…
So far, he’s listed as definite for “The Rum Diary” and “Shantaram,” but only rumored for “Sin City 2 & 3.”
Looks like we might be in for a lot of Johnny in 2008! Here’s hoping!
